INTERIORS: Recaro touts new business class concept with a ...
Recaro, one of the leaders in economy class seating, is testing out a new business class seat concept that features a seat with a fully lie-flat space attached.
Company CEO Mark Hiller says the design criteria driving the potential new design are direct aisle access and offering a separate sleeping area for passengers that accompanies the seat.
While the seat may give the impression of taking up more space, Hiller explains that ?if you do the evaluation?you will figure out it [the seat] is more efficient than existing concepts available in the market?. He estimates carriers could increase passengers counts by 10% ?with such a seating concept?, and states the pitch on the possible new design could go down to 45in.
Recaro plans to get feedback from potential customers here at the Aircraft Interiors Expo ?and then after the show decide how to go forward?, says Hiller.

China: Four more have H7N9 bird flu
A further four cases of a bird flu virus not previously seen in humans have been reported by authorities in China.
Three women aged 32, 45 and 48, and an 83-year-old man were diagnosed between 19 and 21 March and are critically ill.
There have now been seven confirmed cases of the H7N9 virus, the World Health Organization said. Two people have died.
But the WHO says there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission.
However more than 160 people who have had contact with the individuals are being closely monitored.
So far, none has developed symptoms.
The latest cases were seen in the Jiangsu province while the earlier cases were in the Shanghai and Anhui provinces.
Two contacts of one of the Shanghai cases who developed symptoms are being retrospectively investigated.
One died and the other recovered, but as yet there has been no laboratory confirmation of whether they were infected with H7N9.

It has advised the population to maintain good personal hygiene, including frequent hand-washing and avoiding direct contact with sick or dead animals.
The WHO is not recommending any travel or trade restrictions.
Dr John McCauley, Director of WHO Collaborating Centre on Influenza at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research, said: "The virus belongs to the A(H7N9) sub-type, a sub-type that has not previously infected humans, and has emerged from the reservoir of avian influenza viruses.
"It is not known how the virus was transmitted.

"The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating whether there has been any human-to-human transmission."
Tests suggest the virus could be treated with the anti-influenza drugs Tamiflu and Relenza.

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis on Monday took an emotional, close-up look at the tomb of Peter, the church's first pontiff, buried beneath St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican said.
By doing so, Francis became the first pontiff to visit the necropolis, where pagans and early Christians were buried, since extensive archaeological excavations were conducted at the ancient site decades ago, the Vatican said.
The 45-minute "visit of devotion to the tomb of St. Peter" was private, the Vatican said, but it later released a video of it.
The basilica was built over the location where early Christians would gather in secret, at a time of persecution in ancient Rome, to pray at an unmarked tomb believed to be that of Peter, the apostle Jesus chose to lead his church.
The Vatican first said Francis would pray at Peter's tomb, but later said he prayed instead in the basilica.
The new pope "paused in silent prayer, in profound and emotional meditation" in the Clementine Chapel in the vast basilica that is "the closest place (in the basilica) to the tomb of the Prince of the Apostles," it said.
During a tour of the necropolis conducted by its director and an Italian cardinal, the pope "climbed up a bit, got closer to the place where the tomb of St. Peter lies, exactly under the central altar and the dome of the basilica," the Vatican said.
Francis walked down the entire main street of the ancient city of the dead, the statement said. The streets of the necropolis are similar to those of ancient Rome, only they are flanked by tombs instead of shops and apartments.
The Vatican said Francis walked to the necropolis entrance from the hotel on the Vatican grounds where he lives, took the tour and later ? after paying homage at the tombs of several popes in another underground level known as the grottoes, including Pius XII, Paul VI and John Paul I ? strolled back to his residence.
The underground excursion was a sharp departure from how popes in past years often spent the day after Easter, known in Italy as "little Easter." Those pontiffs would head to Castel Gandolfo, the Vatican palace in the Alban Hills, a short drive from Rome.
But that oasis of sprawling gardens and strolling paths in the quaint hill town is occupied by the predecessor of Francis, Benedict XVI, who spent the last hours of his papacy there before becoming the first pope in 600 years to retire. Benedict is staying in Castel Gandolfo until a monastery at the Vatican in Rome can be readied for him.
Many Italians spend "little Easter" by having a picnic lunch in the countryside or in city parks, and Francis told Romans and tourists who gathered in St. Peter's Square at noon Monday to see him to "have a good lunch." Francis said he was praying that Easter would inspire the faithful so that "hatred gives way to love, lies to truth," and that it would especially comfort those in "most need of trust and hope."
He spoke to them from the studio window of the apartment in the Apostolic Palace overlooking the square. Benedict and popes before him lived there, but so far Francis, who stresses simplicity, has declined to move into the quarters.
Instead, he has continued to stay at the Vatican hotel, where, as Buenos Aires archbishop, he stayed with fellow cardinals to elect Benedict's successor. They chose him, Jorge Bergoglio, the first pontiff from South America.
St. Peter's mission was to continue to preach the message of Jesus and reach more souls. Francis, as a Jesuit, is steeped in the evangelizing mission of the church, and the necropolis tour brings him back to the origins of the church in its simplest years as a community of Christians professing their faith in defiance of the crackdown by Roman emperors.
Peter himself was among the Christian martyrs during Nero's reign. He is believed to have been crucified, head down, on the Vatican hill.
Constantine, the first Christian emperor, had an early basilica built on the slopes of the Vatican Hill, burying the pagan and Christian cemetery ? necropolis means 'city of the dead' ? that surrounded Peter's burial site.
The current basilica, named after St. Peter, was constructed over the earlier basilica that was deemed unsafe and demolished in the late 15th century.
The Baroque master architect Bernini designed the bronze canopy over the central altar over the spot of Peter's burial site. The current basilica was planned as an awe-inspiring monument that would project the image of a powerful church.
Under popes of the last century, extensive excavations were carried out of the sprawling necropolis. In 1965, archaeologists said they had found the bones of Peter in an area near an ancient Greek inscription saying "Peter is here."
Part of a nearby necropolis came to light in 2003 during construction of a parking lot.
A few years ago, the Vatican unveiled the largest and most luxurious of the pagan tombs under St. Peter's Basilica ? that of a family of former slaves.
Guided tours of the necropolis, upon appointment, have been one of the most sought-after attractions for tourists to the Vatican.

Italy invites Argentina to match dedicated to pope
Associated Press Sports
updated 2:11 p.m. ET April 2, 2013
ROME (AP) -Italy has officially invited Argentina to play a friendly in Rome on Aug. 14 that coach Cesare Prandelli hopes will be preceded by an audience for both squads with newly elected Pope Francis.
The Italian football federation announced that it sent an invitation Tuesday to the Argentine federation.
Pope Francis is from Buenos Aires and is a known football fan.
The match, if Argentina accepts, would likely be held at Rome's Stadio Olimpico, a short drive from Vatican City.
Italy's last match with Argentina was also a friendly in Rome, in 2001, which Argentina won 2-1. Before that, Diego Maradona's Argentina knocked host Italy out of the 1990 World Cup on penalties in a memorable semifinal match in Naples.

Proponents of the law believe that it will remove an avenue for sex offenders to attract and abuse new victims. However, the law?s critics contend that there is no actual evidence that the statute has done anything to prevent sexual abuse, and only curtail the constitutional rights of those that have paid their debt to society.
In New Hampshire v. White, the defendant, who is a registered sex offender, was charged with failing to register prior to using a MySpace account. The defendant was originally convicted in 1994 of aggravated felonious sex assault on a child and related felonies, and then convicted of indecent exposure and lewdness in 2005.
The trial court judge dismissed the indictment since the MySpace account was created using the defendant?s real name and a previously registered email address.
The NH Supreme Court ruling reversed the trial court. The New Hampshire Supreme Court noted that MySpace is a ?social networking? website, where users can create profiles and interact with other members. While accessing MySpace and browsing profiles does not require a membership or user profile, posting information does require both registration and a user profile.
As a result, the Supreme Court held that the requirement to make a profile triggers the obligation to report the account?s creation to law enforcement.
The Supreme Court rejected the defendant?s argument that using his previously registered email to create the profile should remove the requirement to register his MySpace profile. The Supreme Court noted that the New Hampshire sex offender statute separately references user profiles and email addresses, which shows the legislature?s intent for separate registration.
The Supreme Court finally noted that the legislature clearly wanted the statute interpreted broadly, in order to allow law enforcement to fully monitor registered sex offenders.
Sex offenders in NH should certainly take particular note of this case. The New Hampshire Supreme Court sent a clear message that the rules of using the Internet are different for sex offenders than everyone else.
While the constitutionality of such statutes and registration requirements is questionable, it is the current law of the land and failure to obey could land you in hot water. It is simply best to assume that any Internet usage, and particularly the use of social networking sites, will be both heavily regulated and heavily monitored.
In addition, this case also shows the inherent ambiguity of the New Hampshire sex offender statute. The line between what constitutes new accounts related to profiles and add-on services is not clear at all. For example, with regard to third party photo sharing websites and services, there is no guidance regarding whether they require registration with law enforcement as a new ?online identifier? or if they are considered part of the primary account.
With the confusing nature of the regulations regarding Internet and social networking usage for sex offenders, it is extremely important to discuss any questions or concerns with an experienced NH attorney. An experienced attorney will be able to answer any questions regarding the sex offender statute and help steer you clear of trouble with law enforcement.

Bellator?s ratings on Spike were a mixed bag
The ratings news for Bellator's heavily hyped debut on Spike TV Thursday was decidedly mixed. The average viewership of 938,000 made it the most-watched show in the promotion's four-year history, though it lost nearly half of its audience that was delivered by TNA Impact Wrestling.
Bellator's move to Spike was precipitated by the end of the UFC's seven-year relationship with Spike in 2011. The UFC broadcast the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" on Spike in 2005 as a time buy, then stayed on the network for six more seasons.
When the UFC signed an exclusive seven-year deal with Fox in 2011 that put its live events and programming on Fox, FX and Fuel, Spike was without mixed martial arts content. But Spike parent Viacom owns a controlling interest in Bellator and not long after the UFC's departure, Spike and Bellator announced a broadcast relationship.
Spike had a non-compete clause with the UFC and could not air other promotions' MMA content in 2012, so it continued to air replays of UFC content through the year. But in January, Spike was free to air Bellator programming and quickly began, airing Bellator 360 on Jan. 3 and Jan. 10.
Both Spike and Bellator officials banked heavily on the fact that Spike's nearly 100 million television homes would dramatically improve Bellator's ratings. That, in fact, occurred.
The title doubleheader in Irvine, Calif., on Thursday that featured lightweight Michael Chandler defeating Rick Hawn and featherweight Pat Curran besting Patricio "Pitbull" Freire was nearly triple the greatest viewership in its history. Bellator drew 325,000 viewers to MTV2 for Bellator 44 on May 14, 2011. MTV2 is in about 81 million homes.
By that standard, Bellator MMA Live Thursday on Spike was a grand slam home run.
However, it failed significantly in several other categories. It had a strong lead-in from TNA Impact Wrestling, which averaged 1.82 million viewers, and failed to keep it. Bellator MMA Live shed 49 percent of the audience the wrestling show delivered. The number of males 18-34, which is MMA's primary demographic, was roughly the same for wrestling and Bellator. TNA Impact Wrestling drew 141,000 18-to-34-year-old males, while Bellator increased that slightly to 149,000.
The biggest concern for Spike and Bellator officials has to be its performance among 18-to-34 year-old males. Season 13 was the worst-perform year of The Ultimate Fighter, yet it still averaged 578,000 among men 18-34. That was 388 percent better than Bellator's performance Thursday among the same demographic.
The worst the UFC ever did on Spike among males 18-34 was at Ultimate Fight Night 22, when he it attracted 445,000 viewers in the demographic.
Bellator MMA Live also declined Thursday in six of its quarter hour segments, suggesting viewers turned away. A big reason likely is the time slot, given that it began airing live at 10 p.m. on the East Coast. Normally for fight cards on television, the final quarter hour segment or the final two quarter hour segments draw the highest viewership, because that is when the main event is airing. But in Bellator's case, the final two quarter hour segments were its lowest.
In the first 15-minute segment, Bellator hit its peak of 1.219 million viewers. That was still a 33 percent decline from the number Spike had watching wrestling. The show ran 12 minutes long, meaning there were nine quarter hour segments, and Bellator saw a drop from the previous quarter hour in six of them.
It averaged 1.219 million at the open, from 10 p.m. to 10:15 p.m., according to Nielsen numbers. That went to 1.025 million from 10:15 p.m. to 10:30, then ticked up slightly to 1.033 from 10:30 to 10:45. But it had a sharp decline from 10:45 to 11, dropping to 871 thousand viewers.
It also performed poorly against all 14 seasons of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike. The UFC's reality show had a high average viewership of 2.957 million viewers in Season 10, which featured Kimbo Slice. Its lowest-rated season was Season 13, which averaged just 1.38 million viewers.
It also didn't do as well as any of the 26 separate Ultimate Fight Night cards the UFC aired on Spike. The Fight Night cards were numbered Fight Night 1 through 25, with a special card called Ortiz-Shamrock as the 26th.
Those ratings ranged from an average of 4.169 for the third Tito Ortiz-Ken Shamrock fight to 1.151 million for Ultimate Fight Night 22 on Sept. 15, 2010.
It certainly wasn't a home run for Bellator and Spike, though it was not a disaster. The ratings were OK and need to go up to maintain advertiser interest. Significantly, Bellator is going to have to find a way to attract those 18-to-34 year-old males that advertisers covet for it become a long-term success.
The numbers it was attracting on MTV2 were genuinely disastrous, though the cards were aired in standard definition, not high definition. The first Bellator show on Spike was more like a single than a home run in terms of ratings performance, but there is at least room to grow.

Novel sensor provides bigger picture
Duke University engineers have developed a novel sensor that is more efficient, versatile and cheaper for potential use in such applications as airport security scanners and collision avoidance systems for aircraft, cars or maritime vessels.
The researchers fabricated a unique material, known as a metamaterial, that acts as a lens to image scenes using fewer components than conventional detectors. Because of the properties of this man-made material, much of the additional equipment needed for conventional detector systems ? like lenses, mechanical positioners and data storage or transmissions devices ? are not required.
The material itself is a thin laminate with row-upon-row of tiny squares etched onto copper, each one of which is tuned to a different frequency of light. The material is flexible and durable enough to be attached to a wall, wrapped around corners or even laid on the floor like a rug, making it an inexpensive alternative for a variety of sensing applications.
The new system works with microwave light and produces two-dimensional images. The researchers are currently exploring moving the technology to three-dimensional capability in real-world settings.
The Duke researchers reported their findings Jan. 18 on-line in the journal Science. The research was supported by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
"By taking advantage of the unique properties of these metamaterials, we were able to create a system capable of microwave imaging without lenses or any moving parts, " said John Hunt, a graduate student working in the laboratory of senior investigator David R. Smith, William Bevan Professor of electrical and computer engineering at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering.
As an example, Hunt said that in many security situations, imaging systems move a single sensor device with a small aperture in front of the body of the subject, creating an effectively larger aperture. The scanning waves travel through clothing, but skin or other objects reflect the waves. The new device can scan the entire field at once, which would allow for faster and more efficient screening, the researchers said.
"Using conventional systems such as airport security cameras or collision-detection devices, you have to wait for a scan to complete before you can see an image, while the new system can scan an entire range at once," Hunt said.
The metamaterial is made of thousands of tiny apertures that can detect a wide spectrum of frequencies, allowing it to obtain a more global image of the scene, the researchers said.
"Each individual element of the metamaterial is tuned to narrow frequency," said Tom Driscoll, a post-doctoral fellow from the University of California ? San Diego currently working in the Smith lab. "Together the individual elements scan the entire range to capture information about a scene very quickly."
"This system allows us to collect and compress the image during collection, instead of later, averting the detector, storage and transmission costs associated with conventional imaging of a scene," Driscoll said.

Basic Tips for Positioning a Home for a Quick Sale | Home Staging ...
According to recent news stories and research data from industry firms, the U.S. housing market is changing. After years of seeing distressed properties, high levels of inventory and low buyer demand, many areas are finally experiencing a real estate comeback.
For sellers, this is great news. Finally, property owners are seeing a benefit to selling, when only a few years ago they were reluctant to list their homes on the market, knowing they would most likely take a loss. According to real estate website, Zillow.com, some metro areas are even seeing increases in the amount of homes sold for gains, including Albany, NY (78.2% sold for gain, up 3.6% since last year); Atlanta, GA (47.3% sold for gain, up 2.0%) and Phoenix, AZ (64.0% sold for gain, up 17.4%).
The numbers appear to be moving up in more and more metro areas and analysts predict that we will see full-on seller?s markets fairly soon. So clean up your yard, de-clutter your shelves and get ready to put your home on the market. These tips will help your property move quicker and hopefully, help you sell your home for a profit!
1. Inspect and Improve Your Home?s Exterior.
Get your yard in shape. Keep your lawn mowed, remove weeds and overgrowth, trim back shrubs and remove any dead flowers/plants. This may also be a good time to add new mulch, gravel or any other type of landscaping material you use in your yard. While you?re out there, why not take a look at your home?s exterior? Does it need pressure washing? Are there roof shingles that need replacing? Could your mailbox use a fresh coat of paint? Remember, the first thing prospective buyers will see is your home?s front exterior, and a bad first impression could kill a sale before they even walk through the door.
2. Neutralize Your Home?s Interior.
Buyers want to be able to envision their own furniture, accessories and style when they walk through your home. Having a ?clean slate,? so to speak, will help them visualize themselves living there. If your home has colorfully-painted rooms, too much clutter or lots of personal items lying around, it could overwhelm the buyers who come to tour your home. By ?neutralizing? your home, you basically remove yourself from the space and invite others to picture themselves and their things there instead. Hotel rooms are a great example. They have all the necessities (beds, dressers, TVs, etc.), and most even have some tasteful decor (framed art, decorative pillows, etc), but the decor isn?t over-the-top and there is nothing personal in the rooms. Of course it would be unrealistic to expect your home to be completely devoid of anything that indicates a human being actually lives there, but the goal is to get as close to that as possible.
3. Clean, clean clean.
There?s nothing worse for a buyer than touring a home that is unclean. Think of your home?s showing as a date ? you want your home to look as presentable as possible to impress potential buyers. Also keep in mind that potential buyers will probably inspect drawers and cabinets, peek in your fridge and look in your closets. Go the extra step and keep those areas clean and organized.

8 Scandals That Make Lance Armstrong's Doping Look Like No Big Deal
Lance Armstrong, he of illegal performance-enchancing drug confessions, has been called a lot of things recently, among them a "master manipulator" and a "liar." But it's not like he's the first to fake his way to the top, nor the man who made the most doing it.
Of course, there's no one reason to cheat. Some people simply enjoy the thrill of cheating itself, which probably explains why Americans are so willing to cheat, and so unwilling to consider that they'll get caught. I mean, check out these guys:
Charles Van Doren
Van Doren, an author and Colombia professor at the time, became known as one of the biggest cheats in TV history when it was discovered he was <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/21/opinion/21iht-edbeam.1.14660467.html">being supplied answers on the game show</a> "Twenty-One." The episode later inspired the movie <em>Quiz Show</em>.
MIT Blackjack Team
The MIT blackjack team ultimately became a Hollywood sensation when a book and movie came out based on the team's Vegas card-counting scheme, which allowed them to take casinos for an <a href="http://listverse.com/2010/01/24/10-gamblers-who-beat-the-casino/">estimated $5 million at the blackjack table</a>.
Dennis Kozlowski And Mike Swartz
Tyco executives <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/09/mark-swartz-tyco_n_1502909.html">Kozlowski and Swartz were sentenced to up to 25 years in prison for grand larceny</a> when they looted their employer of around $600 million (to buy vital stuff like a $6,000 shower curtain, by the way).
Barry Minkow
Minkow was hailed as an all-American business prodigy for the success of his<a href="http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2012/01/05/barry-minkow-con-man/"> carpet cleaning company ZZZZ Best</a>, founded at just age 16. That is, until it was revealed he'd been cheating investors, using the company as a $100 million Ponzi Scheme, Fortune reports.
Allen Stanford
The formerly private jet-owning, yacht-sailing Stanford earned himself a 110-year prison sentence after orchestrating a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/14/allen-stanford-sentenced-prison-jail-ponzi-scheme-110-years_n_1597286.html">Ponzi Scheme worth an estimated $7 billion</a>.
Ken Lay And Jeffrey Skilling
Lay and Skilling became the executives behind one of the biggest accounting fraud cases in U.S. history when their company Enron was indicted on corruption charges. Lay passed away in 2006, but <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/16/supreme-court-jeffrey-skilling_n_1428432.html">Skilling lost an appeal to overturn his criminal conviction</a> last year.
Walter Anderson
Anderson, a telecommunications entrepreneur, ended up owing the federal government around <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1891335_1891333_1891331,00.html">$200 million after setting up the largest tax evasion scheme to date</a>, via a string of offshore accounts, TIME reports. He was finally caught in 2005.
Bernie Madoff
Madoff may go down in history as one of the biggest cheats of all time, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/20/bernie-madoff-payout-ponzi-scheme-victims_n_1899985.html">running an estimated $65 billion Ponzi Scheme</a> considered the largest in U.S. history. Madoff is now serving a 150-year prison sentence.

Amazon unveils music store ?optimized? for Apple devices
By Agence France-Presse
Thursday, January 17, 2013 16:02 EST
?
Amazon said Thursday its 22-million song music catalog was now ?optimized? for users of Apple devices, making it easier for iPhone owners to circumvent the iTunes store.
The move is part of a new initiative by the Internet retail giant challenging Apple?s dominance of the digital music market.
?For the first time ever, iPhone and iPod touch users can discover and buy digital music from Amazon?s 22-million song catalog using the Safari browser,? Amazon said in a statement.
?Music purchases are automatically saved to customers? Cloud Player libraries and can be downloaded or played instantly from any iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Kindle Fire, Android phone or tablet, Roku, Sonos home entertainment system, or any Web browser, giving customers the freedom to enjoy more music, from more devices than any other major cloud music service.?
The move comes a week after Amazon launched a service that gives compact disc buyers instant copies of music in the Internet ?cloud? in a challenge to iTunes.
Amazon AutoRip provides free MP3 versions of music on CDs bought from the online retail titan.
In the newest announcement, Amazon said its MP3 mobile website for iPhone and iPod touches is built on HTML5, which means customers can make purchases directly from the website.
Amazon offers some deals, including $5 albums, 69-cent songs, and free songs from artists on the rise.
According to research firm NPD, iTunes last year held a 64 percent share of the digital music market and 29 percent share of all music sold at retail. Amazon had 16 percent of the digital market, according to NPD?s September survey.

Armstrong admits doping to Oprah

FILE - In this July 24, 2005, file photo, overall leader Lance Armstrong signals seven for his seventh straight win in the Tour de France cycling race as he pedals during the 21st and final stage of the race between Corbeil-Essonnes, south of Paris, and the French capital. Armstrong confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour de France during a taped interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, reversing more than a decade of denial. Armstrong called his run to seven Tour de France titles "so perfect for so long." (AP Photo/Peter Dejong, File)
CHICAGO (AP) ? He did it. He finally admitted it. Lance Armstrong doped.
He was light on the details and didn't name names. He mused that he might not have been caught if not for his comeback in 2009. And he was certain his "fate was sealed" when longtime friend, training partner and trusted lieutenant George Hincapie, who was along for the ride on all seven of Armstrong's Tour de France wins, was forced to give him up to anti-doping authorities.
But right from the start and more than another two dozen times during the first of a two-part interview Thursday night with Oprah Winfrey, the disgraced former cycling champion acknowledged what he had lied about repeatedly for years, and what had been one of the worst-kept secrets for the better part of a week: He was the ringleader of an elaborate doping scheme on a U.S. Postal Service team that swept him to the top of the podium at the Tour de France time after time.
"At the time it did not feel wrong?" Winfrey asked.
"No," Armstrong replied. "Scary."
"Did you feel bad about it?" she pressed him.
"No," he said. "Even scarier."
"Did you feel in any way that you were cheating?"
"No," Armstrong paused. "Scariest."
"I went and looked up the definition of cheat," he added a moment later. "And the definition is to gain an advantage on a rival or foe. I didn't view it that way. I viewed it as a level playing field."
Whether his televised confession will help or hurt Armstrong's bruised reputation and his already-tenuous defense in at least two pending lawsuits, and possibly a third, remains to be seen. Either way, a story that seemed too good to be true ? cancer survivor returns to win one of sport's most grueling events seven times in a row ? was revealed to be just that.

PREVIEW-Golf-Rookie Henley set for brighter spotlight
By Mark Lamport-Stokes
LA QUINTA, California | Thu Jan 17, 2013 1:58am GMT
LA QUINTA, California Jan 16 (Reuters) - While twice former champion Phil Mickelson can be expected to attract his customary large galleries this week at the Humana Challenge, exciting PGA Tour rookie Russell Henley will command much of the spotlight.
The 23-year-old Henley stunned the golfing world with a spectacular display of clutch putting and ice-cool nerves as he clinched his maiden title on the U.S. circuit by three shots at the Sony Open in Hawaii on Sunday.
Though the American has barely slept a wink since his breakthrough victory, he is excited to be back in action on the golf course this week at the 72-hole pro-am celebrity event in the California desert.
"The last few days have been kind of crazy for me," Henley told reporters on Wednesday while completing his preparations for the third event on the 2013 PGA Tour. "I have just been so excited about everything that's going on.
"Sunday night I flew from Honolulu to L.A. overnight and I didn't really sleep at all. Then last night I just caught myself waking up a lot during the night, feeling like a little kid.
"I just got an invite to play in the Masters and (a three-year-exemption) to play on the PGA Tour and I'm still just trying not to take it for granted. And I'm just really excited to be here and play another golf tournament this week."
Henley became the youngest champion at the Sony Open after storming home with five consecutive birdies to fire a seven-under-par 63 on the tree-lined layout at Waialae Country Club.
He mixed eight birdies with a lone bogey in that final round to post a record 24-under total of 256 in the PGA Tour's first full-field event of the season.
Henley has since been showered with congratulations by his peers and his friends, and was especially humbled after receiving a 'Tweet' from nine-times major champion Gary Player.
"That was pretty cool," Henley smiled. "And I got a lot of texted messages from friends back home and I'm just going through those. Answering those has been pretty special."
HEADY HEIGHTS
Though still feeling fatigued after the heady heights he scaled last week in Honolulu, Henley was confident he would be ready for Thursday's opening round at the Humana Challenge.
"I think one more good night of sleep's going to help," he said. "I'm probably not quite as well rested as I was last week, but I still have a lot of adrenaline and I'm really, really excited to go play. I'm definitely ready."
While Henley is trying to catch up on his sleep, fellow American Mickelson is battling to shake off a lingering "flu-like illness" that has hampered him for the past 10 days.
However, tournament officials said Mickelson was planning to tee off in the opening round at an event he has long relished playing.
The American left-hander is the leading all-time money winner at the 72-hole pro-am celebrity event, previously known as the Bob Hope Classic, and won the title in 2002 and 2004.
"It's a great place to start the season because we have usually very calm conditions, we have great practice facilities and three wonderful golf courses," Mickelson said on a conference call earlier this week.
"And it's a great place for me to start the season because it allows me to work on my game before and after each round. I have a small place out there at one of the clubs that I'll stay in.
"After each tournament round I go practise and put in that time to build a solid foundation for the rest of the West Coast (swing), as well as the rest of the season."
Also competing this week are FedExCup champion Brandt Snedeker, U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson, fellow U.S. Ryder Cup players Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar and 21-year-old Japanese Ryo Ishikawa, who is appearing at the event for the first time.

Dysfunctional DC raises Americans' hackles
By Allison Linn, TODAY
Americans are growing increasingly worried about federal debt and government dysfunction, which economists say could be a sign they are afraid that squabbles about the fiscal cliff and the debt ceiling could derail the nation?s fragile economic recovery.
"I would guess that the real concern is that if Congress screws things up with the fiscal cliff ? and then coming up with the debt ceiling, that it will hurt the economy," said Justin Wolfers, a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan.
The economy in general still tops the list of the biggest problems facing America today, with 21 percent listing it as the biggest issue, according to a Gallup poll released this week.
But the poll conducted in early January found that nearly as many people ? 20 percent ??listed the federal deficit as the top problem facing the country. The percentage of people listing the deficit as the biggest U.S. problem has grown sharply in recent months, while the percentage of people naming the economy in general has fallen.
Over that time, Americans also have grown much more dissatisfied with politicians and the government. About 18 percent listed politicians and the government as the top problem facing the U.S. in the January poll, up from 9 percent in October.
Meanwhile, 16 percent said unemployment was the top problem, down from 26 percent in October. That marks the first time since 2009 that unemployment has not been in the No. 1 or No. 2 spot.
Economists say they don?t necessarily think Americans are less concerned about the economy or the tight job market. Rather, they say, Americans may be growing more concerned that political infighting and the growing federal deficit could hurt the nation?s already fragile economic recovery.
?We?re maybe actually?just as concerned about unemployment as we were six months ago, but we?re much more concerned about the deficit,? said Erik Snowberg, a political economist at the California Institute of Technology.
Snowberg and others say Americans likely want?the government?to fix the nation?s economic woes, or at least not exacerbate them.
?It?s one thing if (politicians) can solve the people?s problems. It?s another thing if they are doing the opposite ? if they?re just arguing and not solving problems and making things worse,? said Chris Christopher, senior principal economist with IHS Global Insight.
Christopher noted that consumer confidence fell sharply in November and December, as the fight over the fiscal cliff started to heat up. Wolfers, at the University of Michigan, documented a similar effect when the debt ceiling fight came up for the first time in the summer of 2011.
Economists say it?s not clear how much of an effect consumer confidence has on things like spending and hiring. But it is clear that consumer confidence is impacted by political strife, and there?s been plenty of that in recent months.
"We're going from the fiscal cliff into higher (taxes) to this bickering over the federal debt ceiling,? Christopher said.
The political strife comes as the nation?s economy appears to be steadily, if slowly, improving. The job market is adding some new jobs each month, and?the housing market appears to at least be stabilizing.
Still, economic growth is not yet strong enough that something couldn?t throw it off course, Snowberg and others say. President Barack Obama warned Monday?that an extended fight over the debt ceiling could weaken the economy or even push the nation back into recession.
The United States is set to hit the limit on how much it can borrow some time in the next month or so, and Congress must approve an increase in that limit so the government can pay its bills. But Republicans would like to use the debt ceiling limit vote as an opportunity to push cuts in government spending, which they say are necessary for the nation?s long-term fiscal health.

Democrats argue that it doesn?t make sense to use the debt limit as the basis for that discussion, since the limit itself does not authorize the government to spend more money.
Wolfers, who does work for Gallup but was not involved in this survey, said the idea that the U.S. could stop paying its bills because of political fighting is astounding to many people who are watching the situation unfold in other countries and in the financial sector.
?It?s a fragile recovery and we certainly don?t need politicians in Washington derailing it,? Wolfers said.
