Google's gunning for web spammers, bans us from mentioning Bieber
Google's changing its search algorithm to punish sites that emphasize search-engine optimization over quality. Mountain View's data centers will exclude sites that offer no useful content, have articles written in keyword-sprinkled gibberish or only link to sites within a cluster. If the computers find it, the site's pagerank will be demoted, with the company expecting to affect around three percent of all English language queries when it goes live later this week. The company isn't providing more details (lest it help those trying to game the system), so just get all of those gratuitous Justin Bieber references out of your system before Friday, okay?

Microsoft to announce 'Woodstock' cross-platform music service at E3?
Are you missing Zune and looking for a Microsoft flavored replacement? According to The Verge, ?Microsoft will be announcing their new music service at E3 this year. Code named 'Woodstock,' the service is allegedly going to be cross-platform, including Android, via an in-browser music player.
The replacement for the Zune service, won't require any browser plugins and is said to integrate deeply with Facebook. While expected to be shown off at E3, the service isn't expected to be launching until later on in the year alongside Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. The bigger question remains, is there room for another music service on Android?

Looking good on Facebook
ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2012) ? A European study of students using online social networking shows that users tend to make new connections via their own more attractive friends regardless of whether they are male or female.
Writing in the International Journal of Web Based Communities, Christina Jaschinski and Piet Kommers of the University of Twente, The Netherlands, explain how they have carried out a preliminary study to try and understand better how relationships develop online. "Social network sites have become essential for managing relationships in today's life," they explain. "Therefore, it is increasingly important for scientists to understand how impressions are formed and connections develop in the virtual world."
The advent of the so-called "Web 2.0," the interactive and sharing version of the world wide web, which includes blogs, video and photo sharing sites, social bookmarking, social media, microblogging sites, such as twitter, and online social networks including Google+ and Facebook, has enabled the sharing, connecting and collaboration of people all over the world with very little technological friction. This has grown considerably especially since the marketing of relatively inexpensive smart phones and the growth of broadband internet connectivity.
People meet, connect and interact in these online communities by using a profile as a representation of their identity, the team explains. Unfortunately, the formation of impressions about a person online almost entirely lacks non-verbal cues other than those based on their profile photo and the status and content of their friends' profiles. Users can control their photo, but not how it is perceived but more importantly they cannot control the profiles of other users. This latter point is not so different from the social networks we form offline, where a newcomer may judge a person based on the company they keep. At least offline the person has the opportunity to project themselves in a more comprehensive manner and deflect such judgements by their own actions and behaviour rather than just that of their friends and associates.
The team recruited 78 students who use perhaps the most popular online social network, Facebook, apparently fast approaching 1 billion users, to investigate how the attractiveness of Facebook friends affects the impressions formed of friends of friends by users. The study simply involved mocking up Facebook profiles and asking the students to carry out a "hot or not" type assessment based purely on the visual appearance of the user's profile photo within the page. The team found that someone is considered more likeable and seen as a potential friend when they are associated with good-looking friends.
The findings could have implications not only for social scientists hoping to understand these new modes of interpersonal behaviour but might also be used by companies and other organisations hoping to benefit from social networking applications. Additionally, the extension of traditional networking for marketing and job hunting offered by the online world is increasingly important and users are more aware of how they are creating an impression, good or bad, in the online world.

MICHIGAN LAWSUIT FOCUSES ATTENTION ON VIOLENT ILLEGAL ACTIONS BY LAW ENFORCEMENT
Moderator?s Note: As we continue to focus attention on the rampant violence perpetrated by law enforcement officers against immigrants we are sharing this important news release from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan, which has just sued federal immigration officials for human rights abuses of a legal immigrant and a citizen relative. The case involves charges of assault and unlawful detention against officers of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for the mistreatment and abuse of a legal permanent resident and a U.S. citizen that were profiled as ?illegal? aliens.?
As we conduct deeper research into this type of structural violence that accompanies the widening state of exception applied to Mexican and other Latina/o origin immigrants, we are finding that the number of such incidents is a serious threat to civil liberties, peaceful co-existence between the U.S. and Mexico, and the quest for a just and equitable immigration policy that addresses the needs of the growing numbers of victims of police state violence on both sides of the border. We are finding that these cases are much more common than we realize and that the majority go unreported for long periods due to police efforts to obscure or cover-up these crimes against humanity.
The United States has complained about its removal from the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR). It is our view that our country does not deserve such an honorable position until it earns the right to be a voice for human rights within its own borders. That right will be earned when our nation takes a hard honest look at and serious steps toward ending state violence against immigrants. It is time for the us to demand that the Department of Justice start prosecuting ICE, Border Patrol, and any other law enforcement agents guilty of murder, assault, rape, and other thug-like acts of hateful violence against unarmed innocent people who are only guilty of seeking work to survive or reunifying with their families.GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. ? The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan and the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center filed a federal lawsuit today on behalf of a U.S. citizen and his mother, a legal permanent resident, who were illegally handcuffed and assaulted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents last year even though they produced driver?s licenses to prove their identities.?Fairness and equality are the most fundamental values we share as Americans. There's nothing fair or equal about arresting citizens and trampling on their rights because of the color of their skin or their ethnicity,? said Miriam Aukerman, ACLU of Michigan staff attorney. ?It is clear that if this mother and son were not Latino, they would not have been handcuffed, assaulted and detained. Not only is this type of racial profiling illegal, but it is counterproductive and erodes community trust.?
Telma Valdez has lived in the United States for 22 years and is a legal permanent resident. ?Her son, Luis Valdez, was born in the U.S. and is a college student at Grand Rapids Community College. On February 23, 2011, Telma and Luis drove to the home of relatives to allow their 6-year-old cousin to play with Luis? new puppy. As they pulled the car into the driveway, ICE agents ran toward them. An agent pointed a gun at Luis and demanded identification. Both Luis and Telma produced their valid driver?s licenses and ICE agents ordered them to get out of the car.
Telma was handcuffed and taken to the back of the car where an agent held a gun to her back and repeatedly hit her head into the trunk of the car, yelling at her to admit she was ?Irma.? Telma screamed out in pain and fear, begging the agent to stop. Luis was handcuffed, and both Luis and Telma were forced into an apartment.
Inside the apartment, Luis and Telma again tried to explain that he was a U.S. citizen and she was a legal permanent resident. ?Eventually, the agents realized what they had done. ?The agents released the Valdezes, but not before one agent threatened Telma that she risked losing her legal status if tried to do anything about what happened. The agents then pushed both Telma and Luis out of the apartment. While Luis was able to catch himself, Telma hit a handrail and sustained injuries to her stomach.?Being born in the U.S., I?ve always felt like a true American. This has always been my home. But most importantly, I always believed I was equal to every other American,? said Luis. ?I never imagined that, just because of my skin color, I would end up in handcuffs and treated like a second-class citizen.?
In their 10-page lawsuit, the ACLU and MIRC asked the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan to declare that the ICE agents violated the Valdezes? Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure and their Fifth Amendment right to equal protection under the law. The Valdezes also accused the ICE agents of assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and false arrest and imprisonment.?From Arizona to Michigan, the stories of racial profiling, intimidation and illegal detention are proof that what happened to Luis and Telma is not unique,? said Susan Reed, lead attorney with MIRC. ?Just this week, the U.S. Senate heard testimony in its first hearing on racial profiling in more than a decade. The message was clear ? it?s time we end such practices and hold law enforcement agencies that use these tactics accountable.?In addition to Aukerman and Reed, Luis and Telma are represented by Michael J. Steinberg of the ACLU of Michigan, ACLU Cooperating Attorney Rhett Pinsky, and Maura Hagen, MIRC staff attorney and Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow.Key News and Documents? Learn The Basics Of Home Improvement Today | Sharing Reviews ...
One of the easiest ways to improve your heating and air condition system is to clean the air vents. You know the air vents are dirty when they look black. Dust the vents thoroughly. Check the vents occasionally because if they turn black quickly, there may be a bigger problem.
An inexpensive way to improve your home with a small cost is to plant a tree. Future landscaping will help maximize the value of your home. The tree you plan now will grow into a great mature shade feature. A properly placed tree can also save on your cooling costs by as much as 40 percent.
When it comes to home improvement, be sure to pay attention to the most visible improvements. Your potential buyers have no choice but to judge your house by what they see, and having things such as peeling paint and overgrown hedges may cause to lose the sale. While it is true that some of the most important improvements are not obvious, for the selling of your house you need to focus on the obvious visual ones.
Don?t plan a home renovation just because you can or just because you have the money. Many times, projects that are designed for the sake of being projects end up missing some other vital component of a home renovation, such as being non-value-adding changes or even causing the home to break local building codes.
During your next home improvement project, make sure to allocate a space to put all the debris that is generated from your work. It can be expensive to remove all that rubbish, so having a plan ahead of time is essential to saving you money and ensuring that your project continues as scheduled.
Are you planning on painting the trim around your windows as a part of your home improvements? Here is a trick that will save you some time. If you have a steady hand, you do not need to mask off the glass when you are painting the trim. If you get a small lap of paint on the glass, simply remove the wet paint from the glass with a damp cloth wrapped around the blade of a putty knife. If the paint has already dried, you can use a razor blade to remove it.
A nice addition to any home is a nicely crafted fence. If your home is lacking a fence, you might decide it is time to build one. Fences look great in just about any home and can help raise the property value of your home. You can also feel a little more secure, as having a fence can help keep random strangers off your property.
Just like when you move a heavy piece of furniture with drawers in it, you will want to remove these from your cabinets and counter bases before you install them. They will be much lighter and easier to deal with if these have been taken out ahead of time. They are very simple and easy to put in when you are finished.
Now you should be able to see why home improvement can be such an enjoyable endeavor to participate in. There is so much fun to be had when anyone tries to improve upon their own home. With these tips in mind, you can start improving your home, just like a pro!
