The New Hampshire Supreme Court ruled that the New Hampshire sex offender reporting statute covers a new MySpace account. New Hampshire law requires NH sex offenders to notify law enforcement when they create new ?online identifiers.?
Proponents of the law believe that it will remove an avenue for sex offenders to attract and abuse new victims. However, the law?s critics contend that there is no actual evidence that the statute has done anything to prevent sexual abuse, and only curtail the constitutional rights of those that have paid their debt to society.
In New Hampshire v. White, the defendant, who is a registered sex offender, was charged with failing to register prior to using a MySpace account. The defendant was originally convicted in 1994 of aggravated felonious sex assault on a child and related felonies, and then convicted of indecent exposure and lewdness in 2005.
The trial court judge dismissed the indictment since the MySpace account was created using the defendant?s real name and a previously registered email address.
The NH Supreme Court ruling reversed the trial court. The New Hampshire Supreme Court noted that MySpace is a ?social networking? website, where users can create profiles and interact with other members. While accessing MySpace and browsing profiles does not require a membership or user profile, posting information does require both registration and a user profile.
As a result, the Supreme Court held that the requirement to make a profile triggers the obligation to report the account?s creation to law enforcement.
The Supreme Court rejected the defendant?s argument that using his previously registered email to create the profile should remove the requirement to register his MySpace profile. The Supreme Court noted that the New Hampshire sex offender statute separately references user profiles and email addresses, which shows the legislature?s intent for separate registration.
The Supreme Court finally noted that the legislature clearly wanted the statute interpreted broadly, in order to allow law enforcement to fully monitor registered sex offenders.
Sex offenders in NH should certainly take particular note of this case. The New Hampshire Supreme Court sent a clear message that the rules of using the Internet are different for sex offenders than everyone else.
While the constitutionality of such statutes and registration requirements is questionable, it is the current law of the land and failure to obey could land you in hot water. It is simply best to assume that any Internet usage, and particularly the use of social networking sites, will be both heavily regulated and heavily monitored.
In addition, this case also shows the inherent ambiguity of the New Hampshire sex offender statute. The line between what constitutes new accounts related to profiles and add-on services is not clear at all. For example, with regard to third party photo sharing websites and services, there is no guidance regarding whether they require registration with law enforcement as a new ?online identifier? or if they are considered part of the primary account.
With the confusing nature of the regulations regarding Internet and social networking usage for sex offenders, it is extremely important to discuss any questions or concerns with an experienced NH attorney. An experienced attorney will be able to answer any questions regarding the sex offender statute and help steer you clear of trouble with law enforcement.

The ratings news for Bellator's heavily hyped debut on Spike TV Thursday was decidedly mixed. The average viewership of 938,000 made it the most-watched show in the promotion's four-year history, though it lost nearly half of its audience that was delivered by TNA Impact Wrestling.
Bellator's move to Spike was precipitated by the end of the UFC's seven-year relationship with Spike in 2011. The UFC broadcast the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" on Spike in 2005 as a time buy, then stayed on the network for six more seasons.
When the UFC signed an exclusive seven-year deal with Fox in 2011 that put its live events and programming on Fox, FX and Fuel, Spike was without mixed martial arts content. But Spike parent Viacom owns a controlling interest in Bellator and not long after the UFC's departure, Spike and Bellator announced a broadcast relationship.
Spike had a non-compete clause with the UFC and could not air other promotions' MMA content in 2012, so it continued to air replays of UFC content through the year. But in January, Spike was free to air Bellator programming and quickly began, airing Bellator 360 on Jan. 3 and Jan. 10.
Both Spike and Bellator officials banked heavily on the fact that Spike's nearly 100 million television homes would dramatically improve Bellator's ratings. That, in fact, occurred.
The title doubleheader in Irvine, Calif., on Thursday that featured lightweight Michael Chandler defeating Rick Hawn and featherweight Pat Curran besting Patricio "Pitbull" Freire was nearly triple the greatest viewership in its history. Bellator drew 325,000 viewers to MTV2 for Bellator 44 on May 14, 2011. MTV2 is in about 81 million homes.
By that standard, Bellator MMA Live Thursday on Spike was a grand slam home run.
However, it failed significantly in several other categories. It had a strong lead-in from TNA Impact Wrestling, which averaged 1.82 million viewers, and failed to keep it. Bellator MMA Live shed 49 percent of the audience the wrestling show delivered. The number of males 18-34, which is MMA's primary demographic, was roughly the same for wrestling and Bellator. TNA Impact Wrestling drew 141,000 18-to-34-year-old males, while Bellator increased that slightly to 149,000.
The biggest concern for Spike and Bellator officials has to be its performance among 18-to-34 year-old males. Season 13 was the worst-perform year of The Ultimate Fighter, yet it still averaged 578,000 among men 18-34. That was 388 percent better than Bellator's performance Thursday among the same demographic.
The worst the UFC ever did on Spike among males 18-34 was at Ultimate Fight Night 22, when he it attracted 445,000 viewers in the demographic.
Bellator MMA Live also declined Thursday in six of its quarter hour segments, suggesting viewers turned away. A big reason likely is the time slot, given that it began airing live at 10 p.m. on the East Coast. Normally for fight cards on television, the final quarter hour segment or the final two quarter hour segments draw the highest viewership, because that is when the main event is airing. But in Bellator's case, the final two quarter hour segments were its lowest.
In the first 15-minute segment, Bellator hit its peak of 1.219 million viewers. That was still a 33 percent decline from the number Spike had watching wrestling. The show ran 12 minutes long, meaning there were nine quarter hour segments, and Bellator saw a drop from the previous quarter hour in six of them.
It averaged 1.219 million at the open, from 10 p.m. to 10:15 p.m., according to Nielsen numbers. That went to 1.025 million from 10:15 p.m. to 10:30, then ticked up slightly to 1.033 from 10:30 to 10:45. But it had a sharp decline from 10:45 to 11, dropping to 871 thousand viewers.
It also performed poorly against all 14 seasons of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike. The UFC's reality show had a high average viewership of 2.957 million viewers in Season 10, which featured Kimbo Slice. Its lowest-rated season was Season 13, which averaged just 1.38 million viewers.
It also didn't do as well as any of the 26 separate Ultimate Fight Night cards the UFC aired on Spike. The Fight Night cards were numbered Fight Night 1 through 25, with a special card called Ortiz-Shamrock as the 26th.
Those ratings ranged from an average of 4.169 for the third Tito Ortiz-Ken Shamrock fight to 1.151 million for Ultimate Fight Night 22 on Sept. 15, 2010.
It certainly wasn't a home run for Bellator and Spike, though it was not a disaster. The ratings were OK and need to go up to maintain advertiser interest. Significantly, Bellator is going to have to find a way to attract those 18-to-34 year-old males that advertisers covet for it become a long-term success.
The numbers it was attracting on MTV2 were genuinely disastrous, though the cards were aired in standard definition, not high definition. The first Bellator show on Spike was more like a single than a home run in terms of ratings performance, but there is at least room to grow.

Duke University engineers have developed a novel sensor that is more efficient, versatile and cheaper for potential use in such applications as airport security scanners and collision avoidance systems for aircraft, cars or maritime vessels.
The researchers fabricated a unique material, known as a metamaterial, that acts as a lens to image scenes using fewer components than conventional detectors. Because of the properties of this man-made material, much of the additional equipment needed for conventional detector systems ? like lenses, mechanical positioners and data storage or transmissions devices ? are not required.
The material itself is a thin laminate with row-upon-row of tiny squares etched onto copper, each one of which is tuned to a different frequency of light. The material is flexible and durable enough to be attached to a wall, wrapped around corners or even laid on the floor like a rug, making it an inexpensive alternative for a variety of sensing applications.
The new system works with microwave light and produces two-dimensional images. The researchers are currently exploring moving the technology to three-dimensional capability in real-world settings.
The Duke researchers reported their findings Jan. 18 on-line in the journal Science. The research was supported by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
"By taking advantage of the unique properties of these metamaterials, we were able to create a system capable of microwave imaging without lenses or any moving parts, " said John Hunt, a graduate student working in the laboratory of senior investigator David R. Smith, William Bevan Professor of electrical and computer engineering at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering.
As an example, Hunt said that in many security situations, imaging systems move a single sensor device with a small aperture in front of the body of the subject, creating an effectively larger aperture. The scanning waves travel through clothing, but skin or other objects reflect the waves. The new device can scan the entire field at once, which would allow for faster and more efficient screening, the researchers said.
"Using conventional systems such as airport security cameras or collision-detection devices, you have to wait for a scan to complete before you can see an image, while the new system can scan an entire range at once," Hunt said.
The metamaterial is made of thousands of tiny apertures that can detect a wide spectrum of frequencies, allowing it to obtain a more global image of the scene, the researchers said.
"Each individual element of the metamaterial is tuned to narrow frequency," said Tom Driscoll, a post-doctoral fellow from the University of California ? San Diego currently working in the Smith lab. "Together the individual elements scan the entire range to capture information about a scene very quickly."
"This system allows us to collect and compress the image during collection, instead of later, averting the detector, storage and transmission costs associated with conventional imaging of a scene," Driscoll said.

According to recent news stories and research data from industry firms, the U.S. housing market is changing. After years of seeing distressed properties, high levels of inventory and low buyer demand, many areas are finally experiencing a real estate comeback.
For sellers, this is great news. Finally, property owners are seeing a benefit to selling, when only a few years ago they were reluctant to list their homes on the market, knowing they would most likely take a loss. According to real estate website, Zillow.com, some metro areas are even seeing increases in the amount of homes sold for gains, including Albany, NY (78.2% sold for gain, up 3.6% since last year); Atlanta, GA (47.3% sold for gain, up 2.0%) and Phoenix, AZ (64.0% sold for gain, up 17.4%).
The numbers appear to be moving up in more and more metro areas and analysts predict that we will see full-on seller?s markets fairly soon. So clean up your yard, de-clutter your shelves and get ready to put your home on the market. These tips will help your property move quicker and hopefully, help you sell your home for a profit!
1. Inspect and Improve Your Home?s Exterior.
Get your yard in shape. Keep your lawn mowed, remove weeds and overgrowth, trim back shrubs and remove any dead flowers/plants. This may also be a good time to add new mulch, gravel or any other type of landscaping material you use in your yard. While you?re out there, why not take a look at your home?s exterior? Does it need pressure washing? Are there roof shingles that need replacing? Could your mailbox use a fresh coat of paint? Remember, the first thing prospective buyers will see is your home?s front exterior, and a bad first impression could kill a sale before they even walk through the door.
2. Neutralize Your Home?s Interior.
Buyers want to be able to envision their own furniture, accessories and style when they walk through your home. Having a ?clean slate,? so to speak, will help them visualize themselves living there. If your home has colorfully-painted rooms, too much clutter or lots of personal items lying around, it could overwhelm the buyers who come to tour your home. By ?neutralizing? your home, you basically remove yourself from the space and invite others to picture themselves and their things there instead. Hotel rooms are a great example. They have all the necessities (beds, dressers, TVs, etc.), and most even have some tasteful decor (framed art, decorative pillows, etc), but the decor isn?t over-the-top and there is nothing personal in the rooms. Of course it would be unrealistic to expect your home to be completely devoid of anything that indicates a human being actually lives there, but the goal is to get as close to that as possible.
3. Clean, clean clean.
There?s nothing worse for a buyer than touring a home that is unclean. Think of your home?s showing as a date ? you want your home to look as presentable as possible to impress potential buyers. Also keep in mind that potential buyers will probably inspect drawers and cabinets, peek in your fridge and look in your closets. Go the extra step and keep those areas clean and organized.

Lance Armstrong, he of illegal performance-enchancing drug confessions, has been called a lot of things recently, among them a "master manipulator" and a "liar." But it's not like he's the first to fake his way to the top, nor the man who made the most doing it.
Of course, there's no one reason to cheat. Some people simply enjoy the thrill of cheating itself, which probably explains why Americans are so willing to cheat, and so unwilling to consider that they'll get caught. I mean, check out these guys:
Van Doren, an author and Colombia professor at the time, became known as one of the biggest cheats in TV history when it was discovered he was <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/21/opinion/21iht-edbeam.1.14660467.html">being supplied answers on the game show</a> "Twenty-One." The episode later inspired the movie <em>Quiz Show</em>.
The MIT blackjack team ultimately became a Hollywood sensation when a book and movie came out based on the team's Vegas card-counting scheme, which allowed them to take casinos for an <a href="http://listverse.com/2010/01/24/10-gamblers-who-beat-the-casino/">estimated $5 million at the blackjack table</a>.
Tyco executives <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/09/mark-swartz-tyco_n_1502909.html">Kozlowski and Swartz were sentenced to up to 25 years in prison for grand larceny</a> when they looted their employer of around $600 million (to buy vital stuff like a $6,000 shower curtain, by the way).
Minkow was hailed as an all-American business prodigy for the success of his<a href="http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2012/01/05/barry-minkow-con-man/"> carpet cleaning company ZZZZ Best</a>, founded at just age 16. That is, until it was revealed he'd been cheating investors, using the company as a $100 million Ponzi Scheme, Fortune reports.
The formerly private jet-owning, yacht-sailing Stanford earned himself a 110-year prison sentence after orchestrating a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/14/allen-stanford-sentenced-prison-jail-ponzi-scheme-110-years_n_1597286.html">Ponzi Scheme worth an estimated $7 billion</a>.
Lay and Skilling became the executives behind one of the biggest accounting fraud cases in U.S. history when their company Enron was indicted on corruption charges. Lay passed away in 2006, but <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/16/supreme-court-jeffrey-skilling_n_1428432.html">Skilling lost an appeal to overturn his criminal conviction</a> last year.
Anderson, a telecommunications entrepreneur, ended up owing the federal government around <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1891335_1891333_1891331,00.html">$200 million after setting up the largest tax evasion scheme to date</a>, via a string of offshore accounts, TIME reports. He was finally caught in 2005.
Madoff may go down in history as one of the biggest cheats of all time, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/20/bernie-madoff-payout-ponzi-scheme-victims_n_1899985.html">running an estimated $65 billion Ponzi Scheme</a> considered the largest in U.S. history. Madoff is now serving a 150-year prison sentence.

Amazon said Thursday its 22-million song music catalog was now ?optimized? for users of Apple devices, making it easier for iPhone owners to circumvent the iTunes store.
The move is part of a new initiative by the Internet retail giant challenging Apple?s dominance of the digital music market.
?For the first time ever, iPhone and iPod touch users can discover and buy digital music from Amazon?s 22-million song catalog using the Safari browser,? Amazon said in a statement.
?Music purchases are automatically saved to customers? Cloud Player libraries and can be downloaded or played instantly from any iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Kindle Fire, Android phone or tablet, Roku, Sonos home entertainment system, or any Web browser, giving customers the freedom to enjoy more music, from more devices than any other major cloud music service.?
The move comes a week after Amazon launched a service that gives compact disc buyers instant copies of music in the Internet ?cloud? in a challenge to iTunes.
Amazon AutoRip provides free MP3 versions of music on CDs bought from the online retail titan.
In the newest announcement, Amazon said its MP3 mobile website for iPhone and iPod touches is built on HTML5, which means customers can make purchases directly from the website.
Amazon offers some deals, including $5 albums, 69-cent songs, and free songs from artists on the rise.
According to research firm NPD, iTunes last year held a 64 percent share of the digital music market and 29 percent share of all music sold at retail. Amazon had 16 percent of the digital market, according to NPD?s September survey.

FILE - In this July 24, 2005, file photo, overall leader Lance Armstrong signals seven for his seventh straight win in the Tour de France cycling race as he pedals during the 21st and final stage of the race between Corbeil-Essonnes, south of Paris, and the French capital. Armstrong confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour de France during a taped interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, reversing more than a decade of denial. Armstrong called his run to seven Tour de France titles "so perfect for so long." (AP Photo/Peter Dejong, File)
CHICAGO (AP) ? He did it. He finally admitted it. Lance Armstrong doped.
He was light on the details and didn't name names. He mused that he might not have been caught if not for his comeback in 2009. And he was certain his "fate was sealed" when longtime friend, training partner and trusted lieutenant George Hincapie, who was along for the ride on all seven of Armstrong's Tour de France wins, was forced to give him up to anti-doping authorities.
But right from the start and more than another two dozen times during the first of a two-part interview Thursday night with Oprah Winfrey, the disgraced former cycling champion acknowledged what he had lied about repeatedly for years, and what had been one of the worst-kept secrets for the better part of a week: He was the ringleader of an elaborate doping scheme on a U.S. Postal Service team that swept him to the top of the podium at the Tour de France time after time.
"At the time it did not feel wrong?" Winfrey asked.
"No," Armstrong replied. "Scary."
"Did you feel bad about it?" she pressed him.
"No," he said. "Even scarier."
"Did you feel in any way that you were cheating?"
"No," Armstrong paused. "Scariest."
"I went and looked up the definition of cheat," he added a moment later. "And the definition is to gain an advantage on a rival or foe. I didn't view it that way. I viewed it as a level playing field."
Whether his televised confession will help or hurt Armstrong's bruised reputation and his already-tenuous defense in at least two pending lawsuits, and possibly a third, remains to be seen. Either way, a story that seemed too good to be true ? cancer survivor returns to win one of sport's most grueling events seven times in a row ? was revealed to be just that.

LA QUINTA, California | Thu Jan 17, 2013 1:58am GMT
LA QUINTA, California Jan 16 (Reuters) - While twice former champion Phil Mickelson can be expected to attract his customary large galleries this week at the Humana Challenge, exciting PGA Tour rookie Russell Henley will command much of the spotlight.
The 23-year-old Henley stunned the golfing world with a spectacular display of clutch putting and ice-cool nerves as he clinched his maiden title on the U.S. circuit by three shots at the Sony Open in Hawaii on Sunday.
Though the American has barely slept a wink since his breakthrough victory, he is excited to be back in action on the golf course this week at the 72-hole pro-am celebrity event in the California desert.
"The last few days have been kind of crazy for me," Henley told reporters on Wednesday while completing his preparations for the third event on the 2013 PGA Tour. "I have just been so excited about everything that's going on.
"Sunday night I flew from Honolulu to L.A. overnight and I didn't really sleep at all. Then last night I just caught myself waking up a lot during the night, feeling like a little kid.
"I just got an invite to play in the Masters and (a three-year-exemption) to play on the PGA Tour and I'm still just trying not to take it for granted. And I'm just really excited to be here and play another golf tournament this week."
Henley became the youngest champion at the Sony Open after storming home with five consecutive birdies to fire a seven-under-par 63 on the tree-lined layout at Waialae Country Club.
He mixed eight birdies with a lone bogey in that final round to post a record 24-under total of 256 in the PGA Tour's first full-field event of the season.
Henley has since been showered with congratulations by his peers and his friends, and was especially humbled after receiving a 'Tweet' from nine-times major champion Gary Player.
"That was pretty cool," Henley smiled. "And I got a lot of texted messages from friends back home and I'm just going through those. Answering those has been pretty special."
HEADY HEIGHTS
Though still feeling fatigued after the heady heights he scaled last week in Honolulu, Henley was confident he would be ready for Thursday's opening round at the Humana Challenge.
"I think one more good night of sleep's going to help," he said. "I'm probably not quite as well rested as I was last week, but I still have a lot of adrenaline and I'm really, really excited to go play. I'm definitely ready."
While Henley is trying to catch up on his sleep, fellow American Mickelson is battling to shake off a lingering "flu-like illness" that has hampered him for the past 10 days.
However, tournament officials said Mickelson was planning to tee off in the opening round at an event he has long relished playing.
The American left-hander is the leading all-time money winner at the 72-hole pro-am celebrity event, previously known as the Bob Hope Classic, and won the title in 2002 and 2004.
"It's a great place to start the season because we have usually very calm conditions, we have great practice facilities and three wonderful golf courses," Mickelson said on a conference call earlier this week.
"And it's a great place for me to start the season because it allows me to work on my game before and after each round. I have a small place out there at one of the clubs that I'll stay in.
"After each tournament round I go practise and put in that time to build a solid foundation for the rest of the West Coast (swing), as well as the rest of the season."
Also competing this week are FedExCup champion Brandt Snedeker, U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson, fellow U.S. Ryder Cup players Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar and 21-year-old Japanese Ryo Ishikawa, who is appearing at the event for the first time.

Americans are growing increasingly worried about federal debt and government dysfunction, which economists say could be a sign they are afraid that squabbles about the fiscal cliff and the debt ceiling could derail the nation?s fragile economic recovery.
"I would guess that the real concern is that if Congress screws things up with the fiscal cliff ? and then coming up with the debt ceiling, that it will hurt the economy," said Justin Wolfers, a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan.
The economy in general still tops the list of the biggest problems facing America today, with 21 percent listing it as the biggest issue, according to a Gallup poll released this week.
But the poll conducted in early January found that nearly as many people ? 20 percent ??listed the federal deficit as the top problem facing the country. The percentage of people listing the deficit as the biggest U.S. problem has grown sharply in recent months, while the percentage of people naming the economy in general has fallen.
Over that time, Americans also have grown much more dissatisfied with politicians and the government. About 18 percent listed politicians and the government as the top problem facing the U.S. in the January poll, up from 9 percent in October.
Meanwhile, 16 percent said unemployment was the top problem, down from 26 percent in October. That marks the first time since 2009 that unemployment has not been in the No. 1 or No. 2 spot.
Economists say they don?t necessarily think Americans are less concerned about the economy or the tight job market. Rather, they say, Americans may be growing more concerned that political infighting and the growing federal deficit could hurt the nation?s already fragile economic recovery.
?We?re maybe actually?just as concerned about unemployment as we were six months ago, but we?re much more concerned about the deficit,? said Erik Snowberg, a political economist at the California Institute of Technology.
Snowberg and others say Americans likely want?the government?to fix the nation?s economic woes, or at least not exacerbate them.
?It?s one thing if (politicians) can solve the people?s problems. It?s another thing if they are doing the opposite ? if they?re just arguing and not solving problems and making things worse,? said Chris Christopher, senior principal economist with IHS Global Insight.
Christopher noted that consumer confidence fell sharply in November and December, as the fight over the fiscal cliff started to heat up. Wolfers, at the University of Michigan, documented a similar effect when the debt ceiling fight came up for the first time in the summer of 2011.
Economists say it?s not clear how much of an effect consumer confidence has on things like spending and hiring. But it is clear that consumer confidence is impacted by political strife, and there?s been plenty of that in recent months.
"We're going from the fiscal cliff into higher (taxes) to this bickering over the federal debt ceiling,? Christopher said.
The political strife comes as the nation?s economy appears to be steadily, if slowly, improving. The job market is adding some new jobs each month, and?the housing market appears to at least be stabilizing.
Still, economic growth is not yet strong enough that something couldn?t throw it off course, Snowberg and others say. President Barack Obama warned Monday?that an extended fight over the debt ceiling could weaken the economy or even push the nation back into recession.
The United States is set to hit the limit on how much it can borrow some time in the next month or so, and Congress must approve an increase in that limit so the government can pay its bills. But Republicans would like to use the debt ceiling limit vote as an opportunity to push cuts in government spending, which they say are necessary for the nation?s long-term fiscal health.

Democrats argue that it doesn?t make sense to use the debt limit as the basis for that discussion, since the limit itself does not authorize the government to spend more money.
Wolfers, who does work for Gallup but was not involved in this survey, said the idea that the U.S. could stop paying its bills because of political fighting is astounding to many people who are watching the situation unfold in other countries and in the financial sector.
?It?s a fragile recovery and we certainly don?t need politicians in Washington derailing it,? Wolfers said.
What do you think is the biggest current threat to the U.S. economy?

Staff report7:28 a.m. CST, January 17, 2013
A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed after a fight broke out at the end of a high school basketball game at Chicago State University.Tyrone Lawson was shot around 9:20 p.m. outside the gymnasium near 95th Street and King Drive, according to Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O?Brien.
Shortly before the shooting, an argument had broken out in a handshake line after the game between Simeon Career Academy and Morgan Park High School, police said. The argument spilled into the parking lot and someone pulled out a gun and shot Lawson, officials said. Each team was held in the locker rooms longer than normal after the game as tensions ran high in the gym, witnesses said.
University police issued a message to officers, asking them to watch for a Jeep. It was pulled over east of the school and two people were taken into custody, officials said. Police said they found a gun inside the Jeep.
It was unclear what the fight was about. Nothing outside ordinary bumps and physical contact appeared to have happened during the game between the two school, which are located on Vincennes Avenue about 30 blocks apart.
The university released a statement Thursday morning saying it was "deeply saddened by the tragic shooting death."
?(Chicago Public Schools) periodically uses the university?s athletic facility to provide a neutral setting for student sporting events. This is the first such incident to occur on the campus of Chicago State University where CPS students have played many times over the last three years," the statement said.
"Additional security is provided by the university and all external partners during high school sporting events. Arrests have been made and university officials are awaiting the outcome of a full investigation to learn details about the shooting incident.?
Lawson, of the 11600 block of South Peoria Street, was pronounced dead at 9:59 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Most Americans think jarring economic problems will erupt if lawmakers fail to increase the government's borrowing limit. Yet they're torn over how or even whether to raise it, leaning toward Republican demands that any boost be accompanied by spending cuts.
According to an Associated Press-GfK poll, 53 percent say that if the debt limit is not extended and the U.S. defaults, the country will face a major economic crisis. An additional 27 percent say such a crisis would be somewhat likely, while just 17 percent largely dismiss the prospects of such damage.
Separately, Republican officials said Wednesday that GOP lawmakers may seek a short-term extension of the debt limit, thus avoiding a default as early as next month by the U.S. Treasury while they try to negotiate spending cuts with President Barack Obama over the next few months. "The worst thing for the economy is for this Congress and this administration to do nothing to get our debt and deficits under control," said Rep. Paul Ryan, the party's 2012 vice presidential candidate who is chairman of the House Budget Committee.
The poll's findings echo many economists' warnings that failure to raise the debt ceiling and the resulting, unprecedented federal default would risk wounding the world economy because many interest rates are pegged to the trustworthiness of the U.S. to pay its debts. Obama and many Republicans agree with that, though some GOP lawmakers eager to force Obama to accept spending cuts have downplayed a default's impact.
When asked which political path to follow, 39 percent of poll respondents support the insistence by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., that deep spending cuts be attached to any measure increasing the debt ceiling. That's more than the 30 percent who back Obama's demand that borrowing authority be raised quickly and not entwined with a bitter fight over trimming the budget.
An additional 21 percent oppose boosting the debt ceiling at all.
The survey was conducted as the two parties gird for a debt-limit battle that is likely to dominate the next two months in the capital. The fight is sure to underscore partisan differences over how to curb federal deficits that have surpassed $1 trillion for four straight years. Obama insists that besides spending cuts there should be more tax increases on the wealthy, which the GOP opposes.
While saying he will refuse to negotiate on the debt ceiling, Obama has said he will bargain separately on finding ways to reduce the annual federal deficit.
Despite the majority in the survey who fear severe economic problems if the debt limit is not raised, in a separate question only about 3 in 10 supported the general idea of increasing the ceiling. Four in 10 opposed it, with the rest expressing neutral feelings.
Democrats were about twice as likely as Republicans to support boosting the borrowing limit, while Republicans were likelier than Democrats by a similar margin to oppose an increase.
The government reached its $16.4 trillion borrowing limit Dec. 31 but has avoided default by using cash from pension and other funds it administers, money that will eventually be replaced. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has said his ability to use such bookkeeping measures will be exhausted by early March or sooner.
Wayne Wiedrich, 46, an engineering inspector in Williston, N.D., said in a poll follow-up interview that he agrees that failure to boost the debt ceiling would risk severe problems.
"But on the other hand, it's not doing the economy any good to raise the debt limit, print money and spend money we don't have. One of these days China will come knocking on our door and say, 'We own you,'" he said, referring to the country that holds more U.S. debt than any other nation.
Homemaker Sherry Giordano, 59, of Feasterville, Pa., disagreed.
"It has to be done," she said of raising the borrowing limit. "We shouldn't risk our reputation or spend money and time arguing about it. We have to pay our debts."
The survey showed slight shifts in concerns about the economy and federal budget deficits. Eighty-six percent consider the economy a top issue, down 5 percentage points from last summer, while 76 percent have the same view on federal deficits, up 7 points since then.
Around one-third expect the economy to worsen over the next year, the highest figure in AP-GfK polling in nearly two years. Less than 1 in 4 think the economy is in good shape, a fairly stable number since last summer.
Despite the slight edge people give the GOP's debt limit path, the survey showed Obama with some advantages as he begins his second term.
Fifty-four percent approve of how he is handling his job, a figure that has changed little over the past year. That is more than triple Congress' 17 percent approval rating, which edged down 6 percentage points since early December, before the two sides' "fiscal cliff" fight ended with Republicans largely accepting Obama's demands to raise taxes on the country's highest earners.
Democrats also have a slight 41 percent to 36 percent advantage over Republicans as the party more trusted to handle the economy.
Both Obama and Congress have fallen in the public's esteem after their last battle over the debt ceiling.
In AP-GfK polling in June 2011, the president held a 52 percent approval rating. By August, it had declined to 46 percent after down-to-the-wire negotiations with Congress. Congressional approval ratings fell even further, from an already weak 21 percent in June to just 12 percent after the year's debt limit standoff finally ended.
When it comes to finding savings to balance the budget, nearly half prefer cutting government services as the GOP wants, 3 in 10 would rather increase taxes and about 1 in 10 would do both. The percentage backing cuts in federal services has dropped 13 percentage points since the spring of 2011, while the number supporting tax cuts has changed little.
The poll also highlighted how public support dwindles when people are asked about specific cuts.
Given four ideas for reducing budget deficits, only one got majority support: charging top earners higher Medicare premiums, backed by 60 percent. That included roughly even proportions of Democrats and Republicans, and majorities of all income groups in the poll.
Only 30 percent back slowing the growth of annual Social Security benefit increases, which Obama agreed to accept in failed talks with Boehner on crafting a deficit-reduction compromise during the "fiscal cliff" fight. Just 35 percent support gradually raising the current Medicare eligibility age of 65, and 41 percent support defense cuts.
The poll involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,004 randomly chosen adults and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. It was conducted from Jan. 10 to 14 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications.

MARSHALL - U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar stopped at the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI) facilities at Southwest Minnesota State University on Monday for a tour of the laboratories.
Klobuchar, D-Minn., was wrapping up a two-day listening and discussion tour about the importance of renewable energy production for the state's economy and national security.
AURI is a non-profit corporation that works with businesses and entrepreneurs to develop new ideas in agriculture focused on four key areas: food, renewable energy, bio-based products, and co-products.

Ranae Jorgenson, an analytical chemist with the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute facility at Southwest Minnesota State University, right, shows U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar a lab instrument designed to measure the fat content of food and agricultural products.
Klobuchar toured three labs at SMSU dedicated to biomass and renewables, analytical chemistry, and meat science.
"AURI has four missions and one of them is renewable energy," said Douglas Root, senior scientist of biomass and renewable products technologies. "This is our chance to show her what we do here. I deal with co-products such as distillers grain feed, soy wax, what used to be called 'waste.'"
Analytical chemist Ranae Jorgenson led a tour of her lab and showed some of the equipment she uses to determine the fat, moisture, and nutritional content of biomass and food products.
"I can also take fat I've extracted and analyze how much is saturated fat, unsaturated, or Omega 3 fatty acids."
Jorgenson explained her lab also serves small food producers by analyzing their products' nutritional content for commercial labeling.
Meat scientist Carissa Nath show Klobuchar and her staff some of the work the meat lab is currently doing with turkey products.
"Poultry is a lot of fun to work with because it has a milder taste than beef," Nath said. "So you can do things with spices and they're not overwhelmed.
The tour ended with a brief discussion of educational, agricultural, and ag-based business issues, and a briefing by Marshall Mayor Bob Byrnes on the state of the local economy.
"I'm really impressed," Klobuchar said. "This is such a great place for southwest Minnesota, being able to match where the business and the jobs are with the research."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's broad effort to reduce gun violence will include proposed bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips as well as more than a dozen executive orders aimed at circumventing congressional opposition to stricter gun control.
Obama was to announce the measures Wednesday at a White House event that will bring together law enforcement officials, lawmakers and children who wrote the president about gun violence following last month's shooting of 20 young students and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.
The broad package Obama will unveil will also include efforts to stop bullying and boost availability of mental health services.
But Congress would have to approve the bans on assault weapons and ammunition magazines holding more than 10 bullets, along with a requirement for universal background checks on gun buyers. Some gun control advocates worry that opposition from Republicans and conservative Democrats, as well as the National Rifle Association, will be too great to overcome.
"We're not going to get an outright ban," Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., said of limits on assault weapons. Still, McCarthy, a leading voice in Congress in favor of gun control, said she would keep pushing for a ban and hoped Obama would as well.
White House officials, seeking to avoid setting up the president for failure, have emphasized that no single measure ? even an assault weapons ban ? would solve a scourge of gun violence across the country. But without such a ban or other sweeping, congressionally-approved measures, it's unclear whether executive actions alone could make any noticeable difference.
"It is a simple fact that there are limits to what can be done within existing law," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday. "Congress has to act on the kinds of measures we've already mentioned because the power to do that is reserved by Congress."
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed into law the toughest gun control law in the nation, and the first since the Connecticut school shootings. The law includes a tougher assault-weapons ban and provisions to try to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people who make threats.
According to a lobbyist briefed Tuesday, Obama will present a three-part plan focused on gun violence, education and mental health. He'll call for:
? A focus on universal background checks. Right now some 40 percent of gun sales take place without background checks, including by private sellers at gun shows or over the Internet, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
? A ban on assault weapons and limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds or fewer.
? A federal statute to stop "straw man" purchases of guns and crack down on trafficking rings.
? More anti-bullying efforts; more training for teachers, counselors and principals; and funding for schools for more counselors and resource officers.
Obama also will order federal agencies to conduct more research on gun use and crimes, the lobbyist said, something Republican congressional majorities have limited through language in budget bills.
On mental health, Obama will focus on more availability of mental health services, training more school counselors and mental health professionals, and mental health first aid training for first responders, according to the lobbyist, who was not authorized to discuss the plan publicly before the president's announcement and requested anonymity.
The president's framework is based on recommendations from Vice President Joe Biden, who led a wide-ranging task force on gun violence. The vice president's proposals included 19 steps that could be achieved through executive action.
Obama also may order the Justice Department to crack down on people who lie on gun-sale background checks; only a tiny number are now prosecuted. Such a step has support from the National Rifle Association, which has consistently argued that existing laws must be enforced before new ones are considered.
And Obama may give schools flexibility to use grant money to improve safety.
Gun control proponent Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va., who met with Biden on Monday, said the president is also likely to take executive action to ensure better state reporting of mental health and other records that go into the federal background check database. But he, too, acknowledged there were clear limits to what Obama can do without Congress' say-so.
"You can't change the law through executive order," Scott said.
White House officials signaled that Obama would seek to rally public support for the measures he puts forward, perhaps holding events around the country or relying on Organizing for America, his still-operational presidential campaign.
Still, it's unclear how much political capital Obama will exert in pressing for congressional action.
The White House and Congress will soon be consumed by three looming fiscal deadlines. And the president has also pledged to tackle comprehensive immigration reform early this year, another effort that will require Republicans' support and one in which Obama may be more likely to get their backing.
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has warned the White House that it will be at least three months before the Senate considers gun legislation. And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has said immigration, not gun control, is at the top of his priority list after the fiscal fights.
House Republican leaders are expected to wait for any action by the Senate before deciding how ? or whether ? to proceed with any gun measure.

After weeks of debate and delays, the House of Representatives passed a $50.6 billion Sandy relief package yesterday. The Senate is expected to pass the legislation next week.
House approval was widely considered the biggest obstacle for the federal aid package.
Governor Christie, who previously eviscerated House Speaker John Boehner for holding up the legislation earlier this month, said state agencies were already drawing up plans to disburse the federal funds. Christie, along with the New York and Connecticut governors, praised the House for passing the relief package.
Yesterday was a particularly good day for Christie, who saw the state?s revenue shortfall trimmed to $426 million as a result of higher than expected December tax collections.
Tax?revenues came in about $25 million over Christie?s budget targets for the month of December, but it?s unclear whether the?gains mark a new, positive trend for New Jersey?s finances, The Record?s John Reitmeyer reports.
Today, Christie will hold his 100th town hall-style event since becoming governor. The event, to be held in?Manahawkin, is expected to be accompanied by a new fleet of YouTube videos.
In other Christie news, his re-election campaign announced yesterday it will not?seek state matching funds for the primary election cycle.?Christie took advantage of the public financing program when he ran for governor in 2009. The program provides two-to-one matching funds for candidates who raise more than $340,000 and agree to limit spending $10.9 million on the general election and no more than $15.9 million overall.
The governor?s campaign?raised nearly $2.14 million in the fourth quarter and still has $2.08 million cash on hand, according to documents filed yesterday.
Also, the Associated Press reported yesterday that federal immigration agents were prepared to arrest an intern?for Sen. Robert Menendez, who they say is an?illegal immigrant and registered sex offender, just?days before the November elections. The arrest was held up by Washington after officials warned of ?significant interest? from Congress and news organizations.
